Calmeynbos - Nature

The Calmeynbos in De Panne is a lovely dune woodland of around 66 hectares, close to the Flemish coast.
What can you expect at the Calmeynbos?
It is an ideal place for anyone who wants to combine sea, woodland and nature during a walk, bike ride, mountain bike trip or horse ride.
- Shady nature: On warm summer days, the Calmeynbos is a pleasant place to cool down among the tall deciduous and coniferous trees.
- Rich fauna and flora: If you look closely, you may spot birds such as the golden oriole or green woodpecker. The typical dune rabbit, locally often called a dunekeuntje, can also sometimes be seen here.
- Historically planted dune woodland: From 1900 onwards, the woodland was planted at the initiative of agricultural engineer Maurice Calmeyn. The aim was to investigate which trees could grow well so close to the sea.
- Part of Natura 2000: Because of its special natural value, the Calmeynbos is part of the European Natura 2000 network and of the larger nature zone Duinen en Bossen van De Panne.
- Varied landscape: The woodland is crossed by the Kerkstraat, which divides the area into an eastern and western section. In both parts, sustainable nature management is being carried out, with attention to woodland renewal, open spaces, small moss dunes and dead wood as a habitat for animals and insects.
