What is Shell Counting Day?

During this accessible citizen science initiative, you search along the tide line for shells and help researchers gain valuable insights into life in and around the North Sea.

  • Counting shells together: Alongside hundreds of other nature enthusiasts, you collect and count 100 shells using a scientifically sound method.
  • Contributing to research: The results provide insight into changes in marine life, the impact of climate change and the arrival of exotic species.
  • Accessible to everyone: Young and old, beginners and experts alike. No registration is required and enthusiastic shell experts are present at every counting point to help.
  • More than a beach walk: Take a moment to reflect on what you find. A small shell often tells a big story and helps you see the sea and beach differently.
